Model Standards for Beginning Teacher Licensing, Assessment and Development

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

Standard 3: Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs
The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.

Create an annotated Internet bibliography of lesson plan sites appropriate for the subject area and grade level you intend to teach.

Standard 4: Multiple Instructional Strategies
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

Interview and observe at least three teachers at the grade level you intend to teach. Focus on the methods and strategies they use to create a positive learning environment.

Standard 5: Classroom Motivation and Management Skills
The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

Standard 6: Communication Skills
The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

Conduct an observation of at least three teachers at the grade level and subject area you intend to teach. Look for evidence of effective communication.

Prepare a catalog of interactive multimedia resources and materials that you will use as a teacher.

Standard 7: Instructional Planning Skills
The teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.

Standard 8: Assessment of Student Learning
The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learning.

Search the Internet for five informal and five formal assessment instruments designed for the age group and subject level you intend to teach. Include copies of all 10 assessment instruments in your portfolio.

Search the Internet for the National and State Standards for the age and subject area/areas you intend to teach. In a brief paper, compare and contrast the two.

Standard 9: Professional Commitment and Responsibility
The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.

Standard 10: Relationships
The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being.

Attend either a school board meeting or a teacher union meeting and write a one-page narrative of your perceptions and reflection about the meeting.
